Window Terminology
Keeper
The hook-shaped piece of equipment it is mounted on the chassis inside stile of a window casement frame in which the lock engages.
Knocked-down:
Not mounted. Parts of a window frame pre-manu ¬ charged for assembly later on a construction site.
Label:
A projecting molding on the sides and above an opening.
Label stop:
Ornamental projection on each end of a label, the threshold, and of course support. often takes the form of a sculpture or other decorative gargoyle.

Windows bearing fire resistance labels of Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Laminated:
Similar to the construction of windshield of car, this technique sandwiches a piece of transparent film or plastic between two sheets of glass. Mainly used for security reasons because of its resistance to shattering. Also to reduce noise transmission inside.
Lancet window
Tall, narrow window with an arched top, often with diamond shaped lights of lead characteristic of Gothic architecture.
Lattice window (also Diamond):
Window with glazing bars set diagonally.
light lead (also lead glazing; windows): window with small panes of glass rods implanted in grooved lead or molten came. The glass can be clear, colored or tinted.
Elevator:
A handful or grip installed on the bottom rail of a sash window to assist in the raising or lowering the chassis.
Light (also lite):
A window glass in a window. Double-hung windows are designated by the number of lights in the upper and lower chassis, as in 6-on-6.
Lintel:
Horizontal (wood, steel or stone) over a window opening to support the weight of the wall above. A header.
window of the loop (also Balistraria):
A long narrow opening vertical generally expanding inward, cut in a medieval wall, a parapet, or enrichment for use by archers. Changes appear in roman ¬ neo-esque.
Low-E Glass:
A term used to designate glass which has low emissiv ¬ ity because of a film or metallic coating on the glass surface. Usually constructed of double panes of glass sealed coating filled with pure inert gas to block ultraviolet heat, for cooling purposes, while reflecting the ambient heat in the room for heating.
LVL
Laminated veneer lumber - A combination of many pieces of wood veneer glued together to give added structural capacity. Often used in a window or door frames.
Opening of masonry:
The space in a masonry wall left open the window or door.
Meeting rail (also lock rail):
One of the two horizontal elements of a frame guillotine meet. A check rail.
Meeting stile:
The vertical member in a pair of uprights, as in adjoining windows wings.
stone mold (also in stone amount):
A stone that serves as a window jamb.
Mortise:
A slot or rectangular cavity cut into a piece of wood to receive another part.
Mortise and Tenon:
A joint solid wood done by fitting a mortise in one board and a matching protrusion (tenon) in the other.
Mullion:
A vertical element (Usually wood or metal) to structurally join two window or door.
Braces:
Vertical or horizontal bars used to separate glass in a frame in multiple lights. Often called a grid.
Blade nailing:
An extension of vinyl or aluminum attached to the frame of a window or a door that creates a seal be ¬ between window and wall framed. Acts as an additional barrier against infiltration of air and water. Nails or screws are fixed by the end to hold the device in the opening.
NFRC Label:
NFRC National Fenestration is the Rat ¬ ment Council. The trade group for nonprofit sets energy standards for windows - the label NFRC shows everything you need to know about the window you
plans.
North-light roof
sawtooth roof with oriented north clerestory.
Ogee curve (also chair rail):
Reverse flex curve commonly found in window moldings and parts special.
window opening:
Window that can be opened for ventilation.
Operator:
A metal arm and gears connected to a window that al ¬ low for easy operation.
Palladian window:
A large window arch-top flanked by small windows on each side.
Panel:
Usually refers to the glass panel or panels door frame.
Parting sheet:
A thin strip of wood that separates the frame into the weight box weight of each amount of old sash windows.
Parting stop:
A vertical band on each amount between the frame of a window sash.

Pivot window units:

Reglet:
molding of plastic or wood placed concrete or masonry Opening for a uniform groove for a spline joint to hold a glass.
Reversible extension blind stop:
Extended shutdown rabbetted who is blind to receive l / 2 or 25/32-in. sheathing.
Opening Gross
A framed opening in which the device will be installed.
R-Value:
The measure of resistance to heat transfer in a material. The higher the R value, the greater the insulation value.
Sash:
Framework of stiles and rails in which the glass of a window or door is fixed.
Saddle Bar:
steel bar light placed horizontally across a window glazing to harden lead.
Saddle Beads:
Cover strips for two components.
Sash lock:
A lock applied to the window to pull the belt tight against the frame (casement) or to pull the check rails together (Sash) to seal the chassis of the weather and safety.
In single-hung window:
Similar window the sash window, with the exception of upper frame is stationary.
Council seat:
A cutting board to fit the contour of a bow or bay window and installed between the sill and the wall surface, providing a seat or a conservation area Plants etc.
Shading Coefficient:
Decimal value that is the solar gain of a window, divided by the solar gain for a single clear glass

Stool an interior trim on a window which extends the sill and acts as a narrow shelf. Often seen on the window sash.
Stop woodwork A member nailed to a window frame to hold, position or separate window parts.
Tandem Locking system interlock that ensures the window with two locking points by operation of a lever.
Tempered glass: Special Treaty Heat, safety glass with high resistance which breaks into pebble-sized particles and not in pieces.
Tenon: A projection rectangular cut out a piece of wood for insertion into a mortise.
Thermal Break: A thermal insulating barrier between two materials thermally conductive.
Transom Common: horizontal separating a door with a window panel above the door, or the separation of window above another.
Transom: A small window located above a door or window.
Top Hung-in the window an awning window pivot up and down with the swaying.
Hull (bar chart as well):
horizontal separating a door from a panel of the window above the door, or separating one window above another.
Triple glazing:
Three panels of glass with two air spaces between, commonly consisting of com ¬ insulating glass with a separate storm belt. Also available insulating window in a single framework.
Triple window:
generally refers to any tripartite group of Windows with square heads. Find houses neo-colonial. Units suggest Palladian windows but they are less expensive to build.
Value U
Measurements of heat transfer through a second data ¬ rial. The higher the U value, the greater the insulation value.
Venetian window:
Even as a Palladian window.
Vertical sliding window:
One or more sashes that move vertically.

Wash cut:

drip water:

Cry cut (also cut drip):
Groove in the bottom of a horizontal board or masonry unit which projects beyond wall service below to prevent water back up to the wall surface.

amount of the window head in a box window frame.

Window with one or more fixed frame and sash move horizontally.
Load Wind:
The force exerted on a surface by moving air.
