What makes a bike take a really long time to warm up?

1990 1200 Sportster 40,000 mi.
I'll warm it up for 3-4 mins and barrels feel warm, but still have to run 1/2 mile or so partially choked before it runs normally?

Carb problem? tired top end ? Or?
Harley dealers don't work on older bikes.

Check the air cleaner.
A dirty air cleaner will make the bike run rich.
You need extra fuel to get the bike initially started.
But the extra fuel will keep the engine cool.
A lean mixture will cause an engine to run hot.
So, if the air cleaner was clean like it's supposed to be, the fuel air mixture would have the correct balance and the engine would run like it was meant to.
