Gianni Truvianni meets Charles Coleman

Of course, I am aware that many do not know who is Charles Coleman and it is for those who are not I chose to write this article as it was the man who in part, is responsible for my love of opera and classical music that even lead the creation of my first book "New York Opera Society. Of course, speaking of Charles Coleman, I am doing on the composer of the New York way back in 1985, was a classmate of mine "Tutoring School of New York" and not with other same name as one who was executed in Oklahoma for murder in 1990 or the famous English painter.

For Charles Coleman I am referring to is the one who gave us many compositions which include "Deep Woods" and "Redemption" with orchestrations songs such as Jimi Hendrix "Manic depressants," Frank Zappa "Uncle Remus," The Beatles "Come Together" and many others. Coleman Charles, Outside display of talent in both composition and organization has done as a singer of merit, as a very early age soprano of the Metropolitan Opera, playing the roles of many children, including one of the "Fedor" in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. "

As for the friendship that developed between Charles and me, it started in the fall of 1985 at the beginning of school term in that was my last junior year, and Charles as he was and still is a year younger than myself. Charles and I at first did not really much to say to another, if we knew each other since ours was a very small school with only 80 students and we were in the same course of European history. History by the way one of the few subjects I was good at school as she had always fascinated me and still learn from past events, with effect from today's reality.

It all started one day, and if I remember correctly it is almost at the beginning of the school year, I do not remember exactly if it was in September or October, as our history teacher, spoke very loudly to us during the class. This is not something that usually did, which even caught himself and explained that the reason it was done if it was because There was a girl in one of his classes who was hard of hearing. I joke at the time suggested he should get a megaphone, Jimmy "The mouth of the South" Hart of the WWF (World Wrestling Federation), who as a manager in professional wrestling is to use a shout instructions, under his direction.

It turned out that Charles Coleman, like me at the time was a fan of the WWF, which was then perhaps through his greatest moment in regard to popularity, it even have a cartoon version which included several of its stars at the time as "Hulk" Hogan, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Andre "The Giant", the Junkyard Dog, Big John Stud and many others. Charles and I, after the class should discuss the fight. Something that we often do when ever speaking time, with him being more a fan of the so-called "good Guy "wrestlers while I prefer the guys from the bay." Loves Piper (real name Roderick Toombs George) who has been hailed as Glasgow, in Scotland and even wore a kilt in the ring with the bagpipes. All this despite the fact that he was really born in Canada.

Much would our discussions on the fight, Piper Pit, which was better or what not and I do not even remember Charles being the good guy, he was lend me a tape of "WrestleMania I". This is a kind gesture on his part, despite the fact that the tape he gave me was great as VHS and Betamax video recorder that I had at the time, which meant that I was not able to watch, but it is thought counts. In fact, such was our fascination with wrestling I started calling Charles "weasel". This is not because of his personality, but its like then director of the WWF under the name of Bobby Heenan. Heenan also as referred to in the wrestling world with his other name often mentioned: "the brain".

It is through our conversations I find that Charles in addition to being a wrestling fan and yes, we both knew it was false, but what matters is not that we found entertaining despite its lack of authenticity that we were constantly reminded by our fellow countrymen, was a composer of orchestral music. Charles, however, was a person out in the days and perhaps even that does not talk much about his talent. However If I recall ever seeing it in the garden, which was located behind our school, take notes. When I approached him, this opportunity to see what he was writing, I discovered his love for classical music that is precisely the music he put on paper almost as easily as you write the words.

By the end of 1985, I could say Charles and I what could be labeled as classmates if nothing else, because we have not had any contact with each other outside "The Tutoring School. I remember Charles personality wise as the soft voice, as opposed to many in our school, perhaps myself included who were anything but as he did not talk much with several specially if he has always had an opinion over many of question on the number of times we are engaged in discussions. Some of them away from the subject of professional wrestling to include politics. This is a topic that we almost never saw questions about things the same way as my views on many topics we discussed were more nearby, then President Reagan while his family had given her tendency to be more liberal. In everything we discussed but we respect each other point of view, even if we disagree more often is not, as was the case for the right to burn the flag that he was curious cons for I am in favor of.

Regarding our relationship with opera and classical music, it started one day (January 1986) on which Charles mentioned and I do not even remember what he gave during our history class he had tickets for tonight to see Luciano Pavarotti at the Metropolitan Opera. It was that Charles had two tickets to see Pavarotti in the role of Mario Cavaradossi in the opera "Tosca" Puccini, with nobody to use the second ticket. I, for the time being not really an opera fan asked if he would care for me let them use the second ticket he was adopted. For my part if I was not the big opera fan that I am now agreed to go given the first time I knew who was also named Pavarotti and Domingo have been among the most heard in the opera. I also went because that for many years before, it would be during the last visit my grandmother States, I had heard me talk about the wonderful qualities of the voice of Pavarotti that she had even pointed out to me while he sang on television. I even mentioned this particular episode of my life in a Another of my articles entitled "Pavarotti, you're gone but not forgotten", which as it is also available on the net.

A Having established that Charles and I went to the opera, we agreed to meet at my apartment, for the simple reason that it was closer the Metropolitan Opera and was downtown apartment of his parents. Charles, arrived on time as I had expected this evening and a little more elegantly dressed, then he normally did at school while I was wearing a jacket and tie but not a costume. Charles met this Occasionally, a cousin of mine who was very young at the time, nine years to be exact, which was very nice and has even said that we left for the opera.

After Charles and I were outside my building, Charles suggested we take the subway, but I said rather than take the subway we should take a taxi. A cab which I gladly paid since Charles was the one who offered the Tickets for the exit, although the night was never told I could imagine their price was much higher, the cost of taking a taxi from the Eastside Westside of Manhattan. It was actually while in the taxi that Charles took time to explain what the opera was on the point we would see, and told me her script that seems interesting. Charles, I could say I saw this opera many times and yet seemed to want to see him again as he held a true love for opera, that I would eventually develop but what concerned that night I just get to know.

Charles and I enjoyed the opera, but since I heard for the first time, there are times when my ear is difficult to follow. That being the case if several parts stuck in my mind as the one in the first act in which Pavarotti sang "Recondita armonia" or that of the fourth act in which he sings "E Lucavan Le Stelle. These are two tunes, which really helped me to know the true power and grace content, like notes come so alive in a way, I had never noticed before. All this lets me see what opera really was. As for the rest of the opera, I found it enjoyable and a return on it, more than twenty years later, I know that it inspired me to listen more opera. Charles and me after that, unfortunately, does not fit all operas together and even lost contact with each other, at least for three years.

At this time of the year 1989 and was one of my friends by the name of Rick Page, who even resembled his cousin most famous and Jimmy Page (the rock group "Led Zeppelin") had invited me to his recital at the New York School of Music. Rick is a piano player who I met while working at a place called "Club of New York City" located on 85th Street between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, who was studying composition in the school above. This was also the school attended by fictional characters in both my books "New York Opera Society" and "What does it Matter."

With my memory serves me I well remember he was sometimes in May, when I went to a music show with Rick in the company of a German friend of mine, which apart from his nationality and sex I remember very little about other then the fact that ours was what would probably be considered as a plutonic friendship. On arrival at the hall were the concert would have been welcomed by my friend Rick, whose German was as smooth as my friend, who came with me. His departure led to their conversation in German that I understood very little but it was just Rick and I friend talked I heard someone near me say: "I can not believe Charles Coleman piano player did not come." I can just suddenly in my mind what could be consider the two together thinking as follows Charles Coleman was a guy I went to school with, he studied classical music, this is a school for music so perhaps this person Charles Coleman refers is the same as the one I knew as a weasel in "The School of New York Tutoring." I soon after everything that had crossed my mind turned to the person who said this and asked "Did you say Charles Coleman?". This person, a man looked at me with surprise and said: "Yes, I "I asked him if he could point to Charles I, he has done and at this moment that I saw again after a long period "Weasel" from high school.

Naturally, I went to Charles and told him hello and talked about old times, and I must admit it is nice to see, not only because it was someone from my school, but I was still getting the memories of those days when we talked about the fight. The concert went well although I have not heard of Charles music but I had the chance to hear the music of Rick and then Rick and I with several of his friends went to a bar. Charles and Rick were friends But that evening Charles chose not to join us for a drink and for some reason I do not know.

The name of the place we went to I do not know though to be honest I did not pay it any mind it was a place I was taken. Many friends of Rick However, there were those who made the biggest impact on me was a Colombian who was then studying to be a conductor, and although his name, I did not pay attention to this subject that I had to say about opera. He told me that, contrary to what I thought the U.S. cultural events like the opera were not exclusive to the rich as we could get a ticket last minute to more or less the same price to go to the movies and make a greasy burger after. In fact, such was the impression that the Colombian sir made me that I base my character Arturo Gomez of my book "New York Opera Society" on him. As for the rest of the evening, it went well enough as by We have listened to my friend Rick to get up and sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" with some other friends who also sang songs.

As for Charles and me, we will continue friendships are so rare we have achieved given our limited time, me with my studies in French and photography while he with his music. Charles is also the one I call whenever I had to purchase a CD of classical music or opera to ask for his opinion on music. I've always been amazed at how he always managed to find out what performers performers were on the CD that I bought it knew them all personally. Well what could be expected from a man whose ear is so thin that he could not recognize each classical piece, he heard, but was it Philharmonic playing.

For my part, would to attend performances of music by Charles the following year in 1990 and 1993, which I found to be more to my taste, then the music Rick but I can not pretend to be a particular fan of one, although I do see two of them to be good at what they do. Charles and I, that night in 1989 have been met and that we have again lost contact with each other that I will never forget the time Charles and I have had. For example they were when he came home to bake cookies or the time we spend in "The Tutoring School of New York" or especially at night when Charles helped me introduce the world of opera.

The last time I saw or talked to Charles Coleman by phone was in 1993 and travel time have separated us but hopefully not for the good that I would to see Charles's mind again, however, for those who want to learn more about Charles I recommend going to www.charlescoleman.com . This is where they will be able to learn more about this composer's most talented, no offense to him but not much of a player piano. I much later that will develop a short friendship with the Polish composer Piotr Rubik. He is my neighbor and student at the school my English, I would like an invitation for Thanksgiving dinner at my house with the lady who was then his girlfriend but his name escapes me at the time present.
